WhatsApp Payments Feature Now Activated In India | Here  Are The Steps For Activating UPI on WhatsApp 

WhatsApp has finally made live its eagerly awaited Payments feature in India.  It is available on IOS and Android platforms and the payment is based on India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI). 

Similar to all other payment apps, the newly launched feature will aid user to send and receive money via Whatsapp. But, currently, it is hard to conclude if the service will help merchant payments.

The company is yet to set up an FAQ page for WhatsApp payment users, however, privacy policy page and terms and condition page are live.  Before enrolling in for Payments service users can check these pages.

Generally, all users are unable to see Payments option in their WhatsApp, as it gets live only after the users with already Payments feature live send messages to another user. Once the message is received, the user needs to reboot the app to access the Payments feature which can be found in WhatApp’s settings.

For all direct bank transfer permission, the feature will rely on India’s UPI. It seems that Facebook-owned Company has joined hands with ICICI Bank for facilitating UPI payments. 

If users want to avail the service they need to accept the terms and condition and verify their current mobile number (which was used to register Whatsapp) again via an SMS to activate UPI. 

There are several banks supported which supports UPI. Here is their list:  Axis, SBI, HDFC, SBI, Allahabad Bank, Yes Bank, etcetera. 

Users Can Use the Following Steps to Activate UPI on WhatsApp


Tap on WhatApps>Settings; in this section, you need to tap on Add New Bank account to add a fresh account under Payments feature. Following this WhatsApp will take you to the terms and condition page for you to accept. Once you have accepted, the next step would be the verification of your number. 

UPI is operating by checking the mobile number, which is linked to your bank account. As mentioned earlier, the number should be the same for your WhatsApp account as well.

Once you’ve completed the verification, the list of affiliated banks will show up. Select your bank where UPI is activated.  Here, your bank details should be revealing the last four digits of your account. If you have more than one bank account, then choose the bank account which you would like to add to UPI on WhatsApp.

In the next step, the users need to type the last six digits of their debit card number and expiry details in order to create a VPA (Virtual Payee Address).

By now we have come to a stage where you can send money.  To do that go to a chat with any person, you can do it even in a group chat. Then tap on the plus (+) symbol for attachments option and there you will find Payments. Just note that if other person Payments is enabled then the feature will work.
When making payments in group chat, users can select a particular member of the group to whom they desire to transfer the money. In case the recipient you selected does not have WhatsApp Payments, you will get an alert for the same. 

With WhatsApp UPI- based payment system, the users in India can easily receive and send money via one the leading messaging apps in the world.  Currently, WhatsApp has a base of about 1.5 billion monthly active users worldwide, out of which 200 million are from India. Therefore, in India, you can use the service in 10 Indian languages.
