OnePlus 6 Will Embrace the Notch and Retain a 3.5mm Headphone Jack, Reveals Co-Founder Carl Pei

OnePlus 6 will certainly have a notch. Defeating the leaks OnPlus has confirmed that its next smartphone flagship will have a notch at the top of its display; similar to the iPhone X.

The trend has been popularized by Apple, and the OnePlus is planning to capture it. The company even rolled out an image showing the look of the notch on its upcoming flagship.

Carl Pei, the Co-founder of OnePlus, in an interview made the information public, and also gave details about the reason for the move. As well as the UI changes, the amendment is to accommodate the notch in its design.

In the conversation with The Verge,  Carl Pei said Oneplus has incorporated the notch on its upcoming flagship—likely to call the OnePlus.  The size of the notch is between the notches appeared on the iPhone X and Essential phones; all will depend on the count of components the company intends to squeeze into the given space.

The company needs to give the space for the notch after working on components likes the earpiece, ambient light sensor, front camera and LED notification light.

Pei said OnePlus won’t need the notch to be designed as big as the iPhone X’s since it will not have a structured light component similar to the dot projector which powers the Apple’s Face ID tech.  it will have dimensions 19.616 x 7.687 mm to be precise.

Pei further adds that the company had manually tested 1,000 of the top Google Play apps to check the reaction to the inclusion of the notch. The conducted test also assessed what sort of compatibility mode the company would need to engineer. You will find the clock on the left of the display in the OnePlus 6 in order to open more space for the status icons. Pei also added that the smartphone would hide the notch while playing a full-screen video.

Several other revelations made by Carl Pei comprises that fact that the smartphone would come with the largest display in a OnePlus device till date. The screen to body ratio is of 90 percent, but it won’t be larger than any existing OnePlus flagship.  He also made clear that the OnePlus won’t be the same as Oppo R15, as per the recent speculation.

The main idea of the company behind using a notch in the display of its next flagship smartphone is to provide users as much as screen real estate as possible, Said Carl Pei, as a notch is the best way forward to accomplish this goal.  The company has already started testing iPhone X –like gesture-based input on its earlier flagships to help get rid of the need for Android’s onscreen navigation buttons. The notch will then help further the plan of more screen space by shifting the notification and status bar into the spaces on either side of it.

During the Interview, Pei Carl confirmed that iPhone X was undeniably an inspiration for the company, agreeing that Apple, “accelerates the adoption of things within the industry", at least, "where it makes sense." Pei elucidated that last line, stating that the OnePlus 6 will retain 3.5mm headphone jack. Also, the OnePlus 6 would retain a bottom chin unlike iPhone X—this is not for any aesthetic or a UX-based reason, but rather due to over the roof cost of it.

The Cupertino giant made use of a flexible OLED panel that shifts the ribbon connector appeared in the conventional displays to the rear of the smartphone by bending it backward. With the cost limitations that the Android manufacturers work with, this wouldn’t be a feasible ask for them, Pei added. In its place, they would go with the bottom chin design to house the display’s ribbon connector.
