Lifi Technology Advantages And Disadvantages

LiFi technology is the new fad that might change the way we look at the internet today. It’s nothing but a Visible Light Communications (VLC) system operating wireless communications traveling at very high speeds. In order to get a Li-fi signal, all you need is a standard Ethernet cable and Lifi ceiling unit and a LED lamp, and you’re good to go.

To transfer data, Li-Fi uses general LED (light emitting diodes) light bulbs used for common household and has the ability to transfer data at a whopping 2.5 gigabits per second. The said transfer rate is incredible right? However, before we conclude our perspective, let’s dig a bit further and find out Lifi technology advantages and disadvantages.

Lifi technology advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of LiFi Technology:

  • LifI could be of great help to already over-clock cellular networks and relief burden if radio spectrum is diverted to Li-fi.

  • The lifi technology can be used as smart lighting; street lamps can be used to give LiFi hotspot. One of the major problems of using the internet in hospitals is a hindrance to medical equipment due to electromagnetic interference.

  •  Here, Li-fi could be the game changer; it can be successfully implemented in hospitals as it does not result in any electromagnetic interference.

  • Lifi can be used for vehicle-to-roadside and vehicle-to-vehicle communication. This will certainly improve the standard of road safety and make a path for better traffic management.

  • One of the major issues with the Wi-Fi is security as it is visible to neighborhood devices. With Li-fi you can easily overcome this issue, as it works via LED light and will only connect with devices in the area of LED lighting spread.

Disadvantages of Lifi Technology:

  • To implement the lifi technology you currently require a specialized hardware, which is unavailable in abundance. Unlike Wi-fi, the Li-Fi has restrictions when it comes to reach.

  • The widespread use of Wi-Fi is a big factor that prevents the use of Li-fi. It is would be a difficult task to replace the conventional Wi-Fi networks with Li-Fi.

  • The Lifi technology is still getting better; the present technology needs to be upgraded to make it usable on the large scale for common public.

  • Since the technology is new, it is expensive, as a huge amount has been poured into research and development. Signals of Li-fi may prone to interference from general lightings, for instance, sunlight, household lightings due to the use of visible light for its transmission.

  • Lifi has its own limitations when it comes to range. The major factors are the dispersion of light and failure of light to pass through objects like the walls of a room.

In Conclusion

These where the Li-fi technology advantages and disadvantages, in conclusion, the technology can revolutionize the way we use the internet, but at the same time, it needs to work on many factors which restrict it from becoming the household name. We can only wait and see how the technology progresses in the future.
